Potato bread is similar to other common bread types, except that potatoes are added to replace some of the flour. In the United States, grocery stores generally sell leavened, sliced potato bread, along with white, wheat and other varieties. Even though wheat toast always gets the oohs and ahhs for being healthier, don't forget I can be healthy too.
If you are trying to lose weight or maintain your current weight, I may be more beneficial than wheat bread because each slice of me has 85 calories, 4 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. It's a misconception that wheat bread is better for weight loss or control because a slice of it has 78 calories, 3 grams of protein and 1 gram of fiber. I'm more energy-dense with twice as much protein and fiber which helps you feel full longer which lowers your urge for snacking.
Most breads have a small amount of B-complex vitamins which help your body convert protein, carbohydrates and fat into energy but potato bread provides 11 percent of your recommended daily intake of B vitamin that helps prevent birth defects in unborn infants, while wheat only contains about 7 percent of your daily needs. So expecting mothers should remember to have me in their daily diet.
A slice of me gives you about 17 percent of the phosphorus you need daily while wheat bread only provides 6 percent. In your face wheat! Phosphorus helps strengthen your bones and teeth. That's why I'm so bright, to help your pearly whites. Wheat has more iron and magnesium for your blood and nerve functions but I am richer in calcium and potassium for your bones and lower blood pressure.
People sure do love me because I'm sweeter, well I have more sugar, about 4grams of sugar per slice which is more sugar than two medium chocolate chip cookies. Yeah, surprising huh? But if you are watching your sodium intake, I'm the best choice because I only have 24 tiny grams of sodium while wheat has a whopping 300 grams. Dude, thats like 12 times more than me. A heap of salt with your toast? No thanks, I'll take the Tato Toast please.
Wheat always sounds healthier but that's not always the case, even live strong.com recommends me and says that I boost the overall nutritional value compared to whole-wheat bread.
